Go out and photograph flowers.

For the last couple years I've driven past these gorgeous flowers that only seem to bloom in the springtime. This year i decided to stop and see what I could do with them.

Dealing with an overcast sky and slight wind I decided that I would concentrate on the flower's shape and see what materialized. I used a Photoshop plug-in, Silver Efex Pro 2 and chose one of the presets as an overall mask. I brushed in the desired effect leaving the center of the flower its natural color.

After a little bit of sharpening and a lot of noise reduction I'm happy with my results.

I"ll be working on a few more Matilija Poppy pictures so stay tune.

I included the before picture, but realize that in the end the final results is what I saw as I photographed.

Thanks to the Nik Software Sure, there were lots of work arounds, but I just wanted to hit print. That's all!

Recently, I needed to replace a couple of Apple Computers and decided to go for their printer rebates. Using the rebate I could buy a printer capable of printing from all my devices wirelessly. This was good or I thought.

I selected a couple of HP printers that could handle any job I threw at it, wirelessly. I choose an HP Photosmart and an HP Photosmart Plus printer. With the ninety-nine dollar rebate that the Apple store was offering I was able to get one printer for free and the other for an additional fifty dollars (plus tax).

So far so good. With printers in tow I made it home to set them up or so I thought. First, I'd start with the HP Photosmart upstairs. I unpacked the box and started to laugh. The first thing I noticed was a zippered pouch (what could be in this I thought to myself) that contained the power cord and ink cartridges. Next I noticed that the printer was in a bag with handles cradled by styrofoam. I wasn't sure about the bag, but thought if this helps me pull the printer out of the box, great.

Setting up the printer was somewhat easy until I installed the ink cartridges. Two cartridges, not a problem, right! After installing and checking the menu it indicated that the color cartridge hadn't been installed (yes it had!). After fiddling with it for a while and not getting anywhere I decided to call HP customer support.

Dialing the HP support line I was prepared to wait the customary 30 minutes or more before I spoke to a live person. Was I surprised that only after a few minutes I was greeted by a live voice? After explaining my problems with the printer, the HP support person (HPSP-let's use this from now on) said no problem, let's try a few things.

When the HPSP says we'll try a few things he wasn't kidding! We spent the next 45 minutes trying various things to get the Photsmart to recognize the color cartridge. Finally, the HPSP suggested that it was indeed the color cartridge and a new one would be sent out immediately.

What service, I thought! The HPSP was nice enough and I thoroughly liked how he handled my printer's issues. He asked me the best address to send the cartridge to and indicated that it would be there in a few days. Finally the cartridge arrived and I installed it. To my delight that seemed to fix the Photosmart's problem and I could print wirelessly from all my devices.

At this point I should tell you that I mentioned to the HPSP that I had another printer downstairs that I would be setting up. I jokingly said, "would I have any issues with that printer?" And of course the answer was NO, it should work just fine.

Well let me ask you...What are the odds that a completely different printer model would have issues? From the moment I plugged in the Photosmart Plus printer I could tell there were problems. I guess the first clue was that all the lights on the front panel were blinking and they weren't supposed to.

Turning the printer on and off didn't help either. I kept getting error codes.

So, you would think that I've had it with HP printers. Yes, but I still wanted something to work with my wireless devices.

My path was clear, make a phone call to HP support and wait...

NO! I was not going to do this, there had to be a better way. And then it hit me, call the Apple store where I bought the printers and see what they could do for me.

Apple said bring the printer on in and we'll exchange it for a new one. They also said let's set up the new printer so we can make sure there are no problems. And they did.

I guess you could say it all worked out. I have two printers that work as advertised. I talked to a very nice HPSP who handled my problem with the Photosmart printer (and solved it!).

And Apple went above and beyond in solving my second printer problem. They could have just told me to call the HPSP and let them figure it out, but they didn't.

So, a love/hate relationship with HP? Yes, I love that the printers work, but not what I had to go through to make them work.

Visit bobsachs.com

Tulips Anyone?

Flowers for springtime?

Visit bobsachs.com

Helping Japan Through This Time of Need

As we are all well aware, Japan has suffered a horrific tragedy this month with earthquakes, a tsunami, and possible radiation fallout (just how much time will tell) with the destruction of their nuclear power plant.

As a photographer I use many products that are made in Japan and have come to rely on them. Cameras, lenses and a slew of other items that make my photography come alive.

In an effort to help the relief effort going on in Japan I'll be donating 20 percent from the sale of each photograph to Mercy Corps which is helping the survivors of the earthquake and tsunami.

So when choosing a Bob Sachs photograph from my website, bobsachs.com, you'll also know that you are helping a worthwhile cause.

The donation period will continue for the next two months, March 15, 2011 through May 15, 2011.

Visit bobsachs.com

The Monthly Special

Every month I run a special on one of my photographs. I call this, "The Monthly Special" and it allows you to buy one of my photographs for less than I normally charge.

Certainly you might ask, why? I do this for the simple reason that I want you to be able to start a collection of Bob Sachs Photographs that you can afford as a first time collector.

The specials can be photographs that are featured on the website, or photographs that have yet to appear. Whatever the case, you can count on the same quality that I normally sell.

The special for this month (March) is called, "Swing Still" and it was taken in Ojai California at a playground.

What caught my interest was the knotted rope that was securing the swing seat. So many knots to hold up a swing used by children!
For this photograph to convey what I saw, I needed to focus on the knots, throw the background out of focus, and capture a part of the swing.

I think I was successful in what I was trying to achieve. What do you think? Did I need to show more of the swing? And what about the background, does it work with the muted colors of brown and green?

I'm interested in your feedback, please comment.

So there you have it,"The Monthly Special."

Visit bobsachs.com

Helping the People of Haiti

We have all heard about the devastating earthquake that rocked
Haiti this past week.

In an effort to help the relief effort going on in Haiti at this time, bobsachs.com will donate 20 percent from the sale of each
photograph to the American Red Cross, selecting Haiti Relief and Development.

Just click the link at the bottom of this post and choose your photograph. No more visits to San Francisco
2. No more nights at my favorite North Beach restaurant
3. No more taking off work for a week
5. No more taking extra time and visiting friends in Santa Rosa
7. No more driving up the coast (101 freeway)
8. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the equipment that we use that we don't use it as intended. Who cares what the lens chart says, are the pixels sharp, what's the best f-stop to use?

How does the photo look?

That's the real question.

Okay, so now that we know the question and we've made our resolution, what do we do next?

To quote an old friend,"Indeed!" Take note StarGate viewers.

I actually anticipated this resolution and have been proactive about making it come to pass.

So should I let you in on my little secret? It really wasn't hard, just find other people who like to photograph and go out there and do it.

Now the question may come up as to how to find other people, join a group, that's what I did.

The internet is a fantastic social machine, matching people with their interests. And it was just those interests that I searched for when I went looking for fellow photographers.

I found a website called, meetup.com. This is one of those social sites that has you type in what you're looking for and how far you're willing to travel for it.

As luck would have it I found a nature photography group starting up and just a few miles from my house.

In future posts I'll talk more about this group, suffice to say it has accomplished its goal, no more pixel peeping for me.

It's all about the photograph.

P.S. Did I mention that I'm thinking of a new camera, more megapixels, larger photosites and...Never Mind!

Visit bobsachs.com

Doing the Photog Thing

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Gd00VPTtKLo/SIgdYGwPrfI/AAAAAAAAADU/DiMple_-6e0/s320/Bob+in+the+field.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5226459667530493426" />

Thanks to Diana for capturing the real Bob Sachs.

Visit bobsachs.com

Do You Believe in Ghosts?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Gd00VPTtKLo/SFIAx3XE4sI/AAAAAAAAADM/Qq5At9PBoIo/s320/Fgallery6-5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5211228575495414466" />

Ghosts? Where was the mudslinging? The dirty tricks? The negative campaign ads?

Those that support Hillary say she needs to win this debate and carry the momentum through to the final primaries (she needs those delegates!).
Obama supporters feel their candidate can do no wrong. I'm sure lots of design decisions were thought about and made. Advice was asked for, and many cards were rejected until that perfect one stood out from all the rest.

So the next time you are given a business card, look at it, really take the time to study it and appreciate it for all the trouble that went into creating it. And finally, toss it in the garbage.

Why?

Because it will probably end up there anyway.

Visit bobsachs.com

A Little Leather Anyone?

<img style="display:block; What about fame? Or is there a more intangible reward?
Let me preface this by saying,"I don't enter photo contests." There I said it!
So how is it that I'm writing about this topic?
I did what I just said I wouldn't do, I entered the above photograph in a contest, and wait there is more, I won third place.

Now as a rule, standard operating procedure for me, is to go out and find interesting things to photograph. I'll work on the photo until I feel it's what I saw orginally, then print it. If I feel the photograph has merit then I'll make some more prints and really zero in on a final product. Finally when I feel that I've done all that I can to the photo I'll place it on my website for sale.
I use a special fine art paper for my photos, but I'm willing to experiment to find that perfect paper, a paper that will show off my prints in their best light.

So a few months ago as I was reading a photo magazine and read about a contest that Legion Paper was having. They were looking for your best photo printed on their paper.

What they were really looking for were photographers to try out Legion's various papers and then possibly switching to their brand, all in the guise of a contest.

And I took the bait.

Needless to say I bought a package of their paper and proceeded to print what I thought were some of my better images for their contest.

A few months after entering I received an email notifying me that I had won third place in their contest.

Going back to the opening sentence, what did I really get out of this contest?
It certainly wasn't riches. For my winnings I received two packages of the same paper I had used, an autographed copy of a rather large photography book, and a small reflector.

These prizes certainly weren't going to put me in a new tax bracket, but they were prizes, nevertheless.

So maybe my goal was fame, did I achieve that? My photo was published on the Legion's Paper website, abeit a little hard to find. I was published in Shutterbug magazine, a one pager showing all the winners with a tag line.

I guess fame may have escaped me.

So, what as a photographer did I get out of this contest (any contest for that matter) if it wasn't riches or fame?

I got validation from other professionals (the judges) in the field.
And that's important. Knowing that others who work in the same field as you like what they are seeing.

Oh sure, I sell photos to customers all the time, but it's not the same as your peer group telling you, "you did good."

So there you have it, the really reason I entered the contest, but it would have been really cool if I had won a car or a chunk of cash.

Visit bobsachs.com

Some Sunshine for a Rainy Southern California

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Gd00VPTtKLo/Rvbbl3v99_I/AAAAAAAAAB8/5YOJN4zXLFU/s320/sunflower-Blog.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5113515870592563186" />
I thought we could use some cheering up after the rain. and of course Tamron. Other sponsors included, Bogen Imaging (tripods),and ExpoImaging(expodisc).

It started in Santa Barbara with a Friday evening get together. We met the photographer, Don Gale, that would be working with us and learned about how the tour would be structured. This first meeting took place inside Samy's Cameras and we were given ample opportunity to spend our money. In fact, as part of our goodie bag we found a twenty dollar gift card from Samys (which we could use anytime). Nice touch.

As our evening continued we learned that we could borrow Tamron Lenses (Canon/Nikon mounts), tripods, and even have the use of a Fuji FinePix S5 Pro digital camera for our shoot the next day.

Saturday was the actual photo part of our workshop. We met early Saturday morning at a public parking lot, got on a bus (not one of those yellow school type busses, but one designed for paying customers, bathroom included) and proceeded to Santa Ynez (about 45 minutes away) and home to Firestone Vineyards where we would be shooting for the day.

Once at the vineyard we gathered in the courtyard, given some last minute instructions, and proceeded to photograph just about anything we choose. For some that meant working with the photographer while others ventured off alone to discover what they could.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Gd00VPTtKLo/RurnZugq4RI/AAAAAAAAABk/JA6mkoaAoAQ/s320/wine+bottles-blog.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5110151156373053714" />
What makes for a successful workshop is access to the professional leading it, his/her enthusiasm, and their sincere desire to work with the attendees.

Don Gale is a successful photographer who takes the time to explain his reasons for how he shoots and demos proper photographic technique. All too often we let the digital camera do all the work for us, not understanding that there are certain photographic principal at work in every photo. Depth of field, light meter readings, composition and a host of others. Don successfully shows how these interact and how with a little thought you can get the photograph you saw in the viewfinder.
Don did a great job explaining things which made for a successful day.

After the shoot we boarded the bus back to Samys and met to discuss how the workshop went. We saw examples of Don's photos that he took during the workshop and he used the time to explain what he was trying to achieve.

No workshop would be complete without raffle prizes and Tamron didn't skimp on these.
Lenses, magazine subscriptions, and software. They were all up for grabs.

Would I recommend this workshop to others?
Of course, but first check to see if Don Gale is leading it.

Visit bobsachs.com

How Not to Photograph in Las Vegas

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Gd00VPTtKLo/Ro2chUEqLrI/AAAAAAAAAA8/RfK0kV3Kzqw/s320/folies+bergere.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5083891650509024946" />
So my wife and I had these great plans of getting away from it all and going to Las Vegas.

Being the Photographer that I am I thought I would take some of the time and photograph the local surroundings (hotels, neon, Hover Dam, landscapes, etc.).

The stage was set, I bought some larger compact flash cards (I didn't plan to bring my computer to download files), check out the gear and make sure it was ready, and even reserved the hotel for an extra couple of days (4 nights 5 days).

Sounds good, right?
WRONG!

The weather was HOT! And when I say HOT I mean the kind of HOT that isn't good for you.
According to the local weather channel, we were in for a heat spell, the kind that gets into the 115's and up.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Gd00VPTtKLo/Ro3afUEqLsI/AAAAAAAAABE/5mJzq-iDko8/s200/m+and+m.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5083959785870208706" />
Now I may think of myself as a photographer, but not the kind that likes to see the glass in his lenses melt, compact flash cards turn to goo, and gasp for air as I venture less than a few feet from the hotel entrance.

You probably think I'm exaggerating, and I am. Canon lenses don't melt at 115 degrees fahrenheit, compact flash cards don't turn to goo, but I'm dead serious about the gasping for air. In fact, just after a few minutes outside I felt so parched and had to quickly find water ( bottled water goes anywhere from $2.00 to $4.00 depending on where you are) to survive.

Don't get the wrong idea of me. I live in the San Fernando Valley (Southern California) and it gets quite hot here. And I'm use to the heat. What I'm not use to is heat that sucks in the air so all you have left is, well...nothing.

I did take some photos, but not nearly the amount I was imagining. As you can see I did manage to get some interesting photographs.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Gd00VPTtKLo/Ro2ZukEqLqI/AAAAAAAAAA0/tDRh1tnffaY/s200/girders+and+sky.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5083888579607408290" />Their is a lesson in all this, don't go to Las Vegas in the summer, wait until it gets cooler. For me it's taking a walk (in a particular area) and shooting photos. Photos can be of anything and it helps to go with a group.I think the group is important because you feed off the energy of the group.

Typically you'll have 3 or 4 photographers shooting the same scene, yet every shot will be different because the photographers will look for different angles in capturing the scene.

For me I look to Thomas Hawk for making PhotoWalking popular. I was amazed at how many pieces of blue packing tape I had to remove. In all, I removed 36 pieces of tape. I made sure that before I fired up the printer I did a quick inspect to see if any more tape needed to be remove. Imagine my surprise, after writing in the DPForum, that a frequent contributor informed me that there is probably more tape. I've looked and can't see any. And the printer seems to work, so I lucked out.

The printer's quality is excellent and I know my customers will appreciate the larger sizes that I will now offer.

Getting into Photography

The question comes up, how did I get into photography? The answer for me starts around the 11th grade. My high school decided to have a photo contest so I entered. I knew these two girls that shared what had to be the messiest locker in school. So I took a picture of the locker with all its mess and won 1st place in the Washington High School photo contest.

So from rather humble beginings I got the bug. Photography was in my blood. That summer my family moved south and I started a new high school, Torrance High. School life can be pretty tough when you're uprooted and going into the twelfth grade. Luckily for me this school had an elective I could take called photography.

Photography was probably the one class I enjoyed the most at school. I found that I could say things with the photos I took that I could never say out loud. Photography was my voice.

After high school I continued on to El Camino Junior College and of course my major, photography. I lucked out with great photo classes and had some wonderful teachers. Hanson Williams and Merril Jones were teachers I respected and worked hard for. Hanson was a professional photographer (portraits, weddings, etc.) working in the South Bay. He had a studio in Hermosa Beach that I would visit from time to time. Merill Jones was the magazine advisor at college.
